Dade Battle Re-Enactment Ride, December 30, 2007
Ride led by Dick and Judy Pritchard Photos courtesy of Mike Ellis
Dick and Judy Pritchard led us on a pleasant backroads ride to the Dade Battle Reenactment. First, we stopped
off at the Riverside Restaurant. Not much to look at from the outside, but had good food at good prices.
Home of the Nobel’ton’ burger, ½ lb of ground beef topped with sauted onions, mushrooms, black olives and provolone cheese. Very tasty.
We arrived at the Dade Battlefield Historic State Park in time to look around at the Seminole and Soldier’s camps.
It is interesting the way people lived in the pre-civil war era.
On the morning of December 23rd, 1835, 108 soldiers led by Brevet Major Francis Langhorne Dade
left Ft. Brooke (Tampa Bay) to march north 100 miles to reinforce Ft. King (present day Ocala).
On the sixth day they were attacked by Seminole Indians.
At the end of the day long battle, the officers and men of Dade’s command had been destroyed.
The Second Seminole War had begun. The war would last seven years, claim thousands of lives,
cost thirty million dollars and force the removal of virtually all Seminoles to Oklahoma.
Dick is a big original Seminoles fan and can’t get enough of seeing his team win.
In all, it was a great ride and an interesting experience. If you missed this year’s ride, they’ll do it again next year.
